Sizing the System Before Anything Else

A central air conditioner that is too large short-cycles, wastes energy, and leaves rooms humid. One that is too small runs constantly and never quite cools the home. That is why every Central AC Installation we perform in Fort Collins starts with a load calculation, not a guess based on square footage alone. We measure the space, account for ceiling height, window count and orientation, insulation levels, and how many people typically occupy the home. The result is a cooling capacity, expressed in tons, that matches the actual heat gain of the structure.

Getting this step right pays off for years. Fort Collins summers bring dry heat with strong afternoon sun, and the difference between a properly sized unit and an oversized one shows up on every utility bill. Northern Air treats the load calculation as the foundation of the entire project because the equipment selection, ductwork evaluation, and refrigerant charge all depend on it. Skipping this step is the most common reason a new system underperforms, and it is a mistake we simply do not make.

What a Complete Central Air Installation Involves

Installing central air conditioning is more than setting a condenser on a pad and connecting a few wires. A full Central Air Installation includes the outdoor condensing unit, the indoor evaporator coil, the refrigerant line set, the condensate drainage path, the electrical circuit, and the thermostat that ties it all together. Each component has to be matched and installed to specification for the system to reach its rated efficiency.

Here is what our team addresses during a typical installation:

  • Condenser placement: We position the outdoor unit on a level pad with adequate clearance for airflow and future service access.
  • Evaporator coil match: The indoor coil is paired to the condenser so the system operates at its designed capacity and efficiency rating.
  • Line set and vacuum: Refrigerant lines are brazed, pressure-tested, and evacuated to remove moisture and air before charging.
  • Electrical and controls: A dedicated circuit, disconnect, and correctly wired thermostat complete the system.

Once the physical work is done, we verify the refrigerant charge, check airflow across the coil, and confirm the temperature split between supply and return air. These final measurements tell us the system is running the way the manufacturer intended. As a locally owned HVAC company, Northern Air stakes its reputation on this kind of thorough finish work.

Ductwork: The Part Most People Forget

You can install the best condenser on the market and still get poor cooling if the ductwork cannot move the air. During a Central AC Installation, we inspect existing ducts for leaks, undersized runs, and blockages. Leaky ducts in an attic or crawlspace can lose a significant fraction of conditioned air before it ever reaches a room, which forces the equipment to work harder and shortens its life.

When we find problems, we seal joints, add or resize runs, and balance the airflow so that distant rooms cool as well as the ones near the air handler. For homes that have never had central air, we design and install the duct system from scratch, planning register locations for even distribution. This attention to the distribution side is what separates a system that merely runs from one that keeps every room comfortable through a Fort Collins July.

Common Scenarios Where Installation Matters

Different homes call for different approaches, and we have handled a wide range of situations across the Front Range:

  1. Replacing an aging system: Older units often use outdated refrigerant and low efficiency ratings. Upgrading to a modern high-SEER2 system lowers operating costs and improves reliability.
  2. Adding central air to a home with only heating: We integrate the cooling coil with the existing furnace or air handler and add the outdoor unit and controls.
  3. New construction and additions: We size and install a complete system for the added space, matching it to the rest of the home.

In each case, the goal is the same: quiet, even, efficient cooling that fits how the home is actually used. Our heating and A/C technicians take the time to understand your individual indoor comfort needs, whether that means prioritizing a hot upstairs bedroom or reducing energy use across a larger property.

The technician that came out, Ronnie, was absolutely wonderful. Extremely professional, quickly installed the new thermostat, and even showed me step by step how to set up the scheduling option on the new one.

Every time Northern Air sends someone out, the work is always done quickly and their prices are definitely more reasonable than most of the companies in the area!

Great company!! Our daughter’s furnace went out yesterday on the coldest day in the past 30 years! Not only did they respond promptly and replace the furnace today, they brought her space heaters last night! I highly recommend this company for their ethical practices, fair prices and commitment to our community! Thank you Nick, JJ and Brett for your help!!

Northern Air installed Central Air in my home in Fall 2021 (I did not have it). I also wanted a high efficiency furnace since my furnace was over 23 years old, even though it was still working. I got bids from 5-6 other HVAC companies. None of them were interested in installing a high efficiency furnace, even the companies recommended by “Efficiency Works” One company would not even install Central Air because they could not figure out how to install in my crawl space. Northern Air were great, efficient, neat, and had the best prices as well!

Been working with Bill D for a couple years at a our home and my mother's home. Recently had the pleasure of working Matt at our business. I can't tell you what a relief it is to have such a trustworthy team to work with. These two gentlemen are absolutely top notch. Highly recommend!

Bill, God bless him, came out on a 100 degree Sunday and fixed our A/C. He had great communication, was on time, and knew exactly what to do and saved the day! I appreciated his great attitude and kind spirit as well. The price was reasonable for a weekend visit. We will definitely use them again!
