Refrigerant, ductwork, combustion efficiency, and electrical load all interact inside a single conditioned space, and managing that interaction across an entire home requires more than swapping parts. As a full-service HVAC contractor serving Fort Collins, CO, Northern Air approaches each system as an integrated whole. When one component drifts out of specification, the effects ripple through the rest of the system, and our job is to find and correct those imbalances before they turn into failures.

The Range of Work We Handle

Northern Air Inc. is a locally owned HVAC company with experience in heating and air conditioning repair, service, and installation. That breadth matters because Fort Collins homes rarely need only one type of work. A furnace that short-cycles may share a problem with an undersized return duct, and an air conditioner that ices over may point back to a restricted airflow issue that also strains the heat side in winter.

Our team of heating and A/C technicians strives to understand your individual indoor comfort needs and takes every step necessary to provide expert heating and A/C solutions in the entire Front Range. This means we look past the immediate complaint to the underlying cause. A homeowner who calls about a noisy blower often has a bearing issue, a static pressure problem, or a loose panel, and each of these requires a different corrective action.

Heating Systems Built for Front Range Winters

Fort Collins winters put sustained demand on heating equipment. Gas furnaces run through long cold stretches, and small inefficiencies compound over a heating season. We measure temperature rise across the heat exchanger, verify gas pressure at the manifold, and confirm that the combustion draft pulls correctly. When any of these fall outside the manufacturer specification, we adjust or repair rather than let the system labor under strain.

Heat pumps and dual-fuel systems have grown more common in the area, and they require close attention to defrost cycles and balance points. We set the changeover temperature so the system uses electric heating when it is efficient and switches to gas backup when outdoor conditions demand it. Correct programming here directly affects your comfort and your operating costs through the coldest months.

Air Conditioning and Warm-Season Comfort

When summer heat builds, an air conditioner has to remove both sensible heat and humidity. We verify that refrigerant charge matches the target subcooling or superheat value for the specific unit, because an overcharged or undercharged system loses capacity and wastes energy. Airflow across the evaporator coil must also land within the designed range, typically around 400 cubic feet per minute per ton, to prevent coil freezing and short cycling.

We also inspect the condenser, clean the outdoor coil, and confirm that the compressor draws current within its rated range. A condenser choked with cottonwood seed or lawn debris rejects heat poorly, and in Fort Collins that debris accumulates quickly during the growing season. Keeping that coil clean protects the compressor, which is the most expensive component in the system.

How We Approach a HVAC Service Call

Every visit follows a deliberate sequence so nothing is overlooked. We document readings, compare them against specification, and explain what we find before we perform any work.

  • Inspection and measurement: We gather temperature, pressure, and electrical readings across the system to establish an accurate baseline.
  • Diagnosis: We trace symptoms back to their root cause rather than treating only the visible complaint.
  • Clear explanation: We describe the condition of the equipment and the options available in plain terms.
  • Corrective work: We complete the repair, adjustment, or installation to the manufacturer standard.
  • Verification: We re-test the system to confirm it operates within specification after the work is done.

Situations Where HVAC Experience Pays Off

Consider a two-story home where the upper floor never cools evenly. Often this traces to duct imbalance or an incorrectly sized return, and correcting the airflow distribution solves a problem that a simple thermostat change never could. In another case, a furnace that trips its high-limit switch may signal a clogged filter, a failing blower motor, or a blocked heat exchanger, each demanding a different response.

These examples show why choosing an experienced HVAC contractor matters. Northern Air brings the diagnostic discipline needed to solve comfort problems at their source, so your heating and air conditioning equipment runs reliably through both the coldest and warmest weeks Fort Collins delivers. We stand ready to keep your home comfortable across every season along the Front Range.

Been working with Bill D for a couple years at a our home and my mother's home. Recently had the pleasure of working Matt at our business. I can't tell you what a relief it is to have such a trustworthy team to work with. These two gentlemen are absolutely top notch. Highly recommend!

The technician that came out, Ronnie, was absolutely wonderful. Extremely professional, quickly installed the new thermostat, and even showed me step by step how to set up the scheduling option on the new one.

Every time Northern Air sends someone out, the work is always done quickly and their prices are definitely more reasonable than most of the companies in the area!

Northern Air installed Central Air in my home in Fall 2021 (I did not have it). I also wanted a high efficiency furnace since my furnace was over 23 years old, even though it was still working. I got bids from 5-6 other HVAC companies. None of them were interested in installing a high efficiency furnace, even the companies recommended by “Efficiency Works” One company would not even install Central Air because they could not figure out how to install in my crawl space. Northern Air were great, efficient, neat, and had the best prices as well!

Great company!! Our daughter’s furnace went out yesterday on the coldest day in the past 30 years! Not only did they respond promptly and replace the furnace today, they brought her space heaters last night! I highly recommend this company for their ethical practices, fair prices and commitment to our community! Thank you Nick, JJ and Brett for your help!!

Bill, God bless him, came out on a 100 degree Sunday and fixed our A/C. He had great communication, was on time, and knew exactly what to do and saved the day! I appreciated his great attitude and kind spirit as well. The price was reasonable for a weekend visit. We will definitely use them again!
