Sizing an air conditioning system correctly matters more than almost any other decision in the cooling process, and it’s where many Fort Collins homeowners run into trouble. An oversized unit short-cycles, turning on and off rapidly without ever properly dehumidifying the air, while an undersized system runs constantly and struggles to reach the thermostat setting on a 95-degree July afternoon. As your air conditioning contractor, we perform a Manual J load calculation that accounts for square footage, window orientation, insulation values, ceiling height, and local climate data to determine the exact cooling capacity your home requires, measured in BTUs and tons.

What Sets a Qualified Air Conditioning Contractor Apart

Northern Air Inc. is a locally owned HVAC company with experience in heating and air conditioning repair, service, and installation. That local ownership means our technicians understand the specific demands of the Front Range, where dry air, sudden temperature shifts, and high-altitude pressure affect how cooling equipment performs. A contractor who works exclusively in this region knows that refrigerant charges, airflow targets, and condenser placement must all account for elevation and the intense afternoon sun common across Fort Collins neighborhoods.

Choosing the right contractor protects your investment. Air conditioning equipment represents a significant purchase, and improper installation voids warranties, shortens equipment lifespan, and inflates energy bills. Our team of heating and A/C technicians strives to understand your individual indoor comfort needs and takes every step necessary to provide expert heating and A/C solutions in the entire Front Range. We document line set lengths, verify electrical connections, and commission every system with verified performance measurements rather than assumptions.

AC Installation Done to Specification

A proper AC installation involves far more than setting a condenser on a pad and connecting it to existing ductwork. We evaluate the entire system as an integrated whole. When we install central air, we confirm that the evaporator coil matches the condenser tonnage, that the ductwork can deliver the required cubic feet per minute of airflow, and that the refrigerant lines are properly sized and free of moisture before charging.

Our installation process follows a consistent sequence designed to eliminate the variables that cause premature failures:

  • System assessment: We measure your home’s cooling load and inspect existing ductwork for leaks, undersizing, or poor insulation that would undermine a new unit.
  • Equipment matching: We pair the condenser, coil, and air handler so SEER2 efficiency ratings are actually achieved rather than theoretical.
  • Refrigerant evacuation: We pull the system into a deep vacuum to remove air and moisture before introducing refrigerant, preventing acid formation and compressor damage.
  • Commissioning: We verify superheat, subcooling, static pressure, and temperature split to confirm the system performs exactly as designed.

This methodical approach is why a well-installed central air system can run efficiently for fifteen years or longer, while a rushed installation often shows problems within the first two seasons.

Air Conditioner Repair When You Need It Most

When an air conditioner fails during a Fort Collins heat wave, the cause is rarely a single obvious component. Our air conditioner repair process begins with systematic diagnosis. We check the thermostat, electrical supply, capacitors, contactors, and refrigerant pressures before concluding what’s actually wrong. A unit that won’t cool might have a failed start capacitor, a clogged condensate drain triggering a safety switch, a frozen evaporator coil from low refrigerant, or a tripped breaker from a struggling compressor.

Common repair situations we handle include weak airflow from dirty filters or collapsed ductwork, warm air caused by refrigerant leaks, loud operation from worn fan bearings, and complete failures from electrical faults. We carry the diagnostic tools and replacement parts needed to resolve most issues in a single visit, restoring comfort without unnecessary return trips.

Maintaining Central Air for Long-Term Reliability

Central air systems reward consistent maintenance with lower operating costs and fewer breakdowns. During seasonal service, we clean condenser coils that accumulate cottonwood seed and dust, inspect electrical connections that loosen from thermal cycling, test capacitor microfarad readings against rated values, and verify that the refrigerant charge remains correct. We also check the condensate drain for blockages and confirm the thermostat communicates accurately with the equipment.

Regular attention to these details prevents the gradual efficiency loss that drives up summer electric bills. A coil coated in grime forces the compressor to work harder, raising head pressure and shortening the unit’s life. By keeping each component within its operating specifications, we help your system deliver consistent cooling year after year.

Whether you need a new installation, an emergency repair, or a maintenance plan to protect equipment you already own, Northern Air brings the technical knowledge and local experience that keep Fort Collins homes comfortable through every season.

What Our Customers Say

Don’t just take our word for it – hear from our satisfied customers

Bill, God bless him, came out on a 100 degree Sunday and fixed our A/C. He had great communication, was on time, and knew exactly what to do and saved the day! I appreciated his great attitude and kind spirit as well. The price was reasonable for a weekend visit. We will definitely use them again!
Marilyn W
Great company!! Our daughter’s furnace went out yesterday on the coldest day in the past 30 years! Not only did they respond promptly and replace the furnace today, they brought her space heaters last night! I highly recommend this company for their ethical practices, fair prices and commitment to our community! Thank you Nick, JJ and Brett for your help!!

Northern Air installed Central Air in my home in Fall 2021 (I did not have it). I also wanted a high efficiency furnace since my furnace was over 23 years old, even though it was still working. I got bids from 5-6 other HVAC companies. None of them were interested in installing a high efficiency furnace, even the companies recommended by “Efficiency Works” One company would not even install Central Air because they could not figure out how to install in my crawl space. Northern Air were great, efficient, neat, and had the best prices as well!

Mindy M

The technician that came out, Ronnie, was absolutely wonderful. Extremely professional, quickly installed the new thermostat, and even showed me step by step how to set up the scheduling option on the new one.

Every time Northern Air sends someone out, the work is always done quickly and their prices are definitely more reasonable than most of the companies in the area!
